Human Rights Day

Stronger Together November Campaign (18)

On December 10th we globally celebrate Human Rights Day. On this day, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948).

This day also coincides with the final day of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence (November 25 – December 10), a global campaign that calls on all of us to speak out and take action to end violence against women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ communities.

At Luke’s Place, we recognize that intimate partner violence is not a private matter; it is a human rights crisis. Every person has the right to live free from violence, yet too many continue to experience harm in their homes and face barriers to safety and justice.

Through our “Intimate Partner Violence is an Epidemic: A Call to Action” campaign, we’ve focused on raising awareness, sharing education, and empowering communities to recognize IPV as both a public health and human rights issue. By providing information, webinars, and practical resources, we’ve helped individuals and professionals across Ontario understand the scope of IPV and how they can support survivors in meaningful ways.

Our work hasn’t stopped with this campaign. Over the past year, we have continued to strengthen our services and advocacy to ensure survivors are protected, heard, and supported.

  • Served more women than ever before – 1,147 – an 8% increase.
  • Expanded our limited-scope legal services within our legal clinic, ensuring more survivors can access critical legal support.
  • Strengthened training and advocacy efforts to advance legal and policy reform across Ontario.

As we mark Human Rights Day, we reaffirm our commitment to building safer communities where survivors are protected, heard, and supported, not only during these 16 days but every day of the year.

Together, we can ensure that everyone has the opportunity to live in safety, dignity, and peace. Your support helps make this work possible.
