“Responding to gender-based violence” panel

Luke’s Place Advocacy Director, Pamela Cross, participated in a panel discussion on gender-based violence at the 2024 Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) conference held on January 21-23, 2024. The panel discussion, “Responding to Gender-Based Violence”, chaired by Mississippi Mills Mayor, Christa Lowry, was the first time this topic has been discussed at such a large gathering of municipal officials from across Ontario.

It’s not too late to make a big difference in the lives of women and children this year

Thanks to YOU,

Ontario women were able to access the support they needed for their family law issues and receive important information about ongoing changes to court operations over the last year. This means that more women had a better understanding of their legal rights, the family court process, and their legal issues. Women were more empowered to speak in court and to participate in other court processes.

Thanks to YOU, Ontario women were able to access support with their family law issues and receive important information about ongoing changes to court operations and services over the last year.

As a result, more women had a better understanding of their legal rights, the family court process, and their legal issues. Women were more empowered to speak in court and to participate in other court processes and were better informed in planning and preparing for their case going forward.

Policy brief on the criminalization of coercive control for the Canadian Women’s Foundation

LEAF and Luke’s Place assisted in the preparation of a  policy brief  for Canadian Women’s Foundation on the criminalization of coercive control. 

The policy brief discusses the unintended consequences that may flow from criminalization, particularly for women from marginalized communities. Luke’s Place provided input on the impact of criminalization on women in the family law system.

Upcoming webinar on emergency motions

In times of crisis, women fleeing abusive situations often require immediate family court orders to ensure the safety of themselves and their children. One way to do this is by filing an emergency motion, also known as an “ex parte” motion. Luke’s Place will be covering this topic at an upcoming CLEO webinar on Tuesday,

Tracking our progress: 2022-23 Annual Impact Report

For Luke’s Place, 2022-23 was a period of adjusting to a new normal. With the lifting of provincial restrictions on vaccines and masks, a new era of recovery began. Our return to the office brought unique challenges in a post-pandemic environment. New workplace priorities emerged, and in response, new strategies were developed.

Feminist organizations launch a new alliance to advance feminist law reform and end gender-based violence in Canada

The National Association of Women and the Law (NAWL) and Luke’s Place announce the launch of The Chanterelle Alliance for Feminist Law Reform.

The Chanterelle Alliance will create the opportunity to foster greater coordination among feminist and equality-seeking organizations in advocating for systemic changes to laws, programs and systems that impact women at all levels of government.

Upcoming webinar on Keira’s Law

The Learning Network and Family Violence Family Law is hosting a webinar next Tuesday, July 25th from 1:00pm to 2:30pm on Keira’s Law. Panelists will include Jennifer Kagan, Keira’s mother and lead advocate for the Bill, Archana Medhekar, Certified Family Law specialist, and Pam Cross, Luke’s Place Advocacy Director.

Increased federal support for families, women and survivors of Intimate Partner Violence in Ontario

July 17, 2023 – Oshawa, Ontario – Department of Justice Canada

Gary Anandasangaree, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, and Ryan Turnbull, Member of Parliament for Whitby, Ontario, announced that the Government of Canada is providing financial support to four projects led by Luke’s Place.
